Britannia Instructor Makes the Azores George Jepps is first under 27ft boat across the Jester Azores Challenge finish line. Many of you I know have been taught by George while on a Britannia course and some of you were here to wave George off on his epic 1237 nautical mile journey to compete in the Jester Challenge Race and raise money for “Little Hearts Matter” charity. George left Shotley Marina mid-May, travelling first to Plymouth where he left the UK on 31 May to single-handedly sail his 25-foot yacht "Culica" in the Jester Azores Challenge. He arrived in the Azores (half way to America) on 14 June. His adventure included the electrics failing four days out so he had to steer the boat by hand and navigate by stars for rest of the 8 days. He also sailed through two gale-force storms. George was the first yacht under 26 feet to arrive and the thirteenth boat over all. As well as competing in the challenge, George was also driven to support a special charity. You may not know that his little grandson has severe heart problems and that's why George chose to raise money for a charity which supports the families of babies and children with major heart defects. “Little Hearts Matter Charity” (Registration No 1058735) is a national charity offering support and information to anyone affected by the devastating diagnosis of a single ventricle heart condition, children born with half a working heart. It works to raise awareness of the needs of these children and their families. Should you wish to make a contribution please visit: www.justgiving.com/georgejepps All money raised goes directly to Little Hearts Matter and donating online is simple, fast and totally secure. Also, as a UK taxpayer an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. George's supporters have dug deep so far and he's been able to raise over £1,500. His sailing was tracked by satellite so supporters were able to plot his progress online and follow his blog updates on www.georgejepps.com For more information about George's trip and fundraising please visit: www.justgiving.com/georgejepps
