 RYA Powerboat Training

We are delighted to offer a comprehensive range of RYA Powerboat courses held on the rivers and estuaries of the East Anglian, Essex, Suffolk borders. At Britannia  you can be assured of the highest quality of tuition from our experienced and professional instructors. Whatever your experience, you will find an RYA approved course to suit. Training takes place aboard our brand new Ribcraft 4.8m boat which is fully equipped to the highest standards. Whichever course you choose you will be introduced to new skills and techniques to make your Powerboating more enjoyable, safer, and fun. Please use the diagram below to find a suitable course. Click on the boxes to see more information about each course.

Which course is suitable for me?

The level one course is a gentle introduction to Powerboating and is ideal for anyone new to the sport. The level two course incorporates level one and introduces new topics to give a very helpful introduction to handling a small powerboat. More experienced powerboaters can take the intermediate course which assumes basic boat handling skills and develops techniques for navigation by day and at high speed. Night navigation is the key feature of the advanced course which also includes techniques for handling powerboats in heavy weather. The safety boat course teaches methods of recovering a variety of small craft including dinghies, windsurfers, canoes, and people in the water.

How long are the courses?

The level one course can be completed in a single day. We usually start at 0900 and finish at 1700 at our base in Shotley Marina. The other courses take two days and overnight accommodation is available locally. The advanced course includes a night exercise, times vary depending on the time of year.

Will I get a certificate?

At the end of each course successful candidates will be awarded a RYA course completion certificate endorsed for planing boats in coastal waters. A certificate is not automatic, and in some cases it is necessary to produce an action plan so that students can brush up on a few areas before returning to complete the course.

What type of boat will we use?

We use a brand new 4.8m RIB (rigid inflatable boat) for the powerboat courses. The boat is equipped with all relevant safety equipment including flares, lifejackets, first aid kit, and a VHF radio. The boat also carries a depth sounder, navigation and search lights and a GPS. Our rib has a 60hp outboard engine giving speeds of up to 30 knots.

Do I need to know any navigation?

We will teach you how to navigate a powerboat. Some experience is helpful, but if you have never done any navigation then that is not a problem. A knowledge of navigation to Day Skipper Shorebased standard is required for students undertaking the advanced course.

What do I need to bring with me?

No specialist equipment is required for powerboat courses. We will provide wet weather clothing and all safety equipment. If you have sailing boots, suitable for yachting or dinghy sailing then these are very helpful, otherwise an old pair of trainers, or clean garden wellies are fine. You would need to bring plenty of warm clothes as driving at night or at high speed can be cold. A hat, gloves and sunglasses are essential. Full joining instructions, including recommended clothing, a map and directions will be sent out at the time of booking.

When are the next courses?

We are keen to be as flexible as possible to arrange courses on dates that suit our clients, either weekend or midweek dates are available. Click on the links above to the individual courses to see suggested dates. If these dates are not suitable then please contact us to discuss your requirements. We can arrange gift vouchers, a level two course for example makes a great birthday present, and group bookings are welcome.
