RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Training

The Day Skipper Theory course assumes that you have no prior knowledge, although some practical experience is useful. However, even quite experienced yachtsmen can also benefit from the course. It should be completed before going on to take your Day Skipper Practical.

The course covers basic navigation and chart work, pilotage and passage planning, tides and tidal streams, and meteorology. It also includes many seamanship and safety topics, such as nautical terms, ropework, and the use of safety equipment.

To get the most from the course, we advise a little pre-course study, and we will send you the details when you book with us.

Courses take place in our dedicated classroom at Shotley Marina. Practice charts, tables, a course handbook and a copy of the collision regulations are supplied, but students will need plotting instruments for chart work, these are available for a small charge at the beginning of the course.
